This Giving Tuesday, we’re excited to announce our partnership with Un Mar de Colores x DJ Javier. Un Mar de Colores is doing incredible work to foster inclusivity, diversity, and ocean stewardship through surf therapy, environmental education, and mentorship for children of color and underserved youth. This collaborative towel features artwork by DJ Javier, a long-time friend of Un Mar. The design was originally created as a mural on the side of Just Peachy, one of the only Mexican-owned markets in coastal Leucadia. The owner’s daughter, Lucy, was part of Un Mar's very first group of students. 100% of the proceeds from this collaboration towel will be donated to Un Mar de Colores.

DJ Javier has been part of the Un Mar family for years, ever since he painted a mural for them at Just Peachy, a special spot in Leucadia with deep roots in the community. For DJ, this project is about more than just art—it’s about supporting a cause that matters deeply to him. 'Working with Mario and Un Mar feels personal. Their work really resonates with me, especially as a POC surfer myself. It’s about making sure underrepresented voices are heard and seen.”
100% of the proceeds from this towel will help Un Mar de Colores continue their life-changing programs for underserved youth, giving them the tools to thrive—both in the ocean and beyond.

Can you tell us about your journey as an artist? What initially drew you to art, and how has your style evolved over the years?
I've always been drawn to art and the creative journey, ever since I was young. While I never had much interest in or talent for team sports, the pull toward art was always there. It wasn't until my late teenage years that I realized I could actually turn this passion into a career. Once I figured out that I could get paid to do what I love, I was all in. My style has always been rooted in a sense of youthfulness, but every day, I strive to refine it—whether through big leaps or small adjustments.
Who are some of your biggest influences—whether artists, musicians, or experiences—that have shaped your work?
I'm influenced by so many things, especially as someone who blends both art and design. One of my goals is always to find ways to merge and combine different worlds and interests. I didn’t grow up in the surfing community, so as a late adopter about 10 years ago, I love weaving my unique perspective and personal story into my work within that space.
How did your relationship with Un Mar De Colores begin?
I first met Mario from Un Mar De Colores years ago on a small temporary mural project. I was brought in to paint a mural celebrating a new non-profit at the time, Un Mar De Colores. We hit it off right away, becoming good friends and staying in touch over the years. I've always had a deep respect for the work he's done, especially as a fellow POC surfer. His work really resonates with me, as well as with the younger version of myself out there.
What drew you to work with them? What values or shared vision do you feel connect you with Un Mar De Colores?
Mario and his team have such an honest, authentic perspective on the work they do. I really admire how they prioritize the community and amplify underserved and unheard voices, especially in a space that can often be filled with so much noise. I'm a strong advocate for getting POC folks and youth in the ocean—whether on a board or not—and Mario is a true champion of that message.
What makes this collaboration unique compared to others you've worked on? How does Un Mar’s mission align with your own values as an artist?
I think knowing Mario on a personal level makes this project truly unique. I've been fortunate to work with various brands and partners, but there's something really special about collaborating with someone you care about, especially when their message resonates with you on such a deep level.
What’s been the most rewarding part of working on this project with Slowtide and Un Mar?
I love the products and the brand of Slowtide, and being a supporter and partner with Un Mar makes this whole project the perfect combination of everything I value.
