Inspired By: Volume 2.
Todd St. John is a designer and visual artist working in New York City. He is also the founder and creative director of the design studio, Hunter Gatherer. We caught up with Todd to learn more about how he became an artist, chat about what inspires him to create and take a trip down memory lane from past collaborations we have done together.

When did you start designing?

As a kid I always drew a lot, played music and was interested in video and animation. I think when I stumbled onto ‘design’ it seemed somewhat amorphous, and it appealed to me because it seemed possible to bring together a lot of things I was already into.

What or who inspired you to start creating art?

I think comics as a kid, and probably music later. The idea that something you made could have that sort of reach and impact was a revelation as a young person.

What did you like about designing a towel?

Design’s all about combining utility and beauty, so a towel totally fits. I like the idea of a sort of traveling canvas as well.

What or who are you currently inspired by?

My youngest son—who’s 11—is a great natural artist and I’m always amazed by what he is coming up with.

Any advice for aspiring artists?

Just keep making. It’s like exercise—the effort matters.

What is a change you've made in your life that has made the most impact on you or the people around you?

When I had children it forced me to make decisions and sacrifices around work that seemed hard at the time, but in retrospect gave me more focus on what’s important both for them and for my work.

When you're not creating, what are you up to?

I still like getting in the water as much as possible, doing stuff with the family.

What is your dream trip?

There’s so many, but the other day I was going down a rabbit hole of what’s involved in driving the circumference of Australia

Do you have a favorite product?

Nothing too fancy…in terms of daily use, I’d say a french press or a mechanical pencil.

Thanks Todd, for taking the time to chat with us + the community here at Slowtide. We are incredibly inspired by you + hope we all take away a piece of inspiration from you, your work and your insight.
